Carmelo Francis Ferrara - December 6, 1922 - New Melleray Abbey, near Dubuque, Iowa - Age 91

Born on December 29, 1922, in Rock island, Illinois to Francisco and Josphine Ferrara
the youngest of nine children. His parents came to America from Sicily in 1919.
His father died when Francis was 3 years old.
The children were raised by their devoted mother, a seamstress.

Carmelo moved to Hernando in 1984 from Dubuque, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Marines in Australia and the South Pacific during World War II

He was a life member of the DAV


He returned to Rock Island after discharge and, while working at the International Harvester factory,
he took up aviation and became a licensed pilot and stunt flyer.

He entered a Trappist monastery, New Melleray Abbey, near Dubuque, Iowa, in 1945.

He was ordained to the sacred priesthood as a Trappist/Cistercian in 1953.

In 1968, Father took leave of the monastery and went into active ministry, but always remained a member of his community.
His first assignment was to St. Ann's Indian Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota,
he ministered to the Chippewa Indians of Turtle Mountain.
From there, he went to St. Joseph's Church in Detroit and, while there,
also enrolled at Detroit University, a Jesuit college, to obtain his master's degree in theology and religious studies.
In 1984, Father Francis moved to Hernando, Florida, to lead a hermetical life.
Monsignor John Scully requested Father to assist his at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Spring Hill.
For the next 25 years, Father Francis spent Friday to Sunday assisting at St. Theresa,
celebrating the Latin Mass at 6:30 every Sunday along with hearing confessions,
ministering to the sick parishioners in the hospitals or at their homes.
He offered Mass monthly at nursing homes in Spring Hills and Woodland Terrace.
He also covered (often weekly) the military funerals in Bushnell for those in the Spring Hill area.

Father Francis is survived by nieces and nephews in New York
and the monks and staff at New Melleray and all his loving family of friends of Hernando and Citrus County - See more at: Here


Father Francis had his funeral rites held and remains placed at the New Melleray Abbey, near Dubuque, Iowa on 9 December, 2014
